Lloyd Reserve Shiraz is produced from a single vineyard at Coriole that was planted in 1919 and the first wine released in 1989.
Tasting note

A beautifully dense and savoury vintage of Lloyd Shiraz showing mulberry, blackberry, sweet spice and soy. A plush and full entry that continues with unfurling layers of tannin. The tannins are fine and long, giving great persistence and presence. The palate is full bodied but elegant with some dark floral notes, berries and a subtle ferrous note.

Vintage conditions

After solid rainfalls during 2017 and early 2018 the vineyards were in good health heading into the growing season. Early spring was cold which led to late budburst and early predictions were for a late vintage. As the season progressed rainfall reduced and there were several warm spells which brought on ripening. A warm dry summer led to much lower yields than initially expected, some bunch weights were half what they were in 2017. Picking started in earnest in mid February and proceeded at a leisurely pace throughout March and into early April. 2018 is a vintage of exceptional quality. The resulting wines are intense and concentrated, the whites rich and flavoursome, the reds structured and complex.

Vinification details

The wine is matured in French oak for approximately 18 months and then receives 18+ months in bottle before release.

Vintage conditions

Conditions in the spring of 2015 were very dry, yet there was impressive vine growth, some old hands saying they had never seen the vineyards looking so good! Above average temperatures in October and December led to predictions of a very early, swift vintage. Ripening, however, slowed in January. 60-70 mm rain fell, followed by an unusually cool February average of 19.5°C. Gentle ripening continued and picking was slow paced and orderly. The resulting wines are excellent; colour is vibrant, aromatics are alluring and the natural balance and mouthfeel is superb.

Vintage conditions

The 2014 vintage was locally described as the holiday vintage; ripening was slow and the estate tell us they had plenty of time to do what they wanted whenever they wanted! The wines turned out very well with plenty of colour, savour and richness along with characteristic Coriole restraint.

Vintage conditions

The lead up to the vintage period looked perfect – winter rains resulted in high subsoil moisture levels, and a mild start to summer with little rain indicated a potential for a longer ripening period. Then January and February came with high temperatures and little rain. This combination brought on grape maturity very quickly. The order of grapes being picked was also different than ‘normal’, with Shiraz often picked before some of the white grapes from the same property. It was a compressed vintage but ultimately a successful one, with the promise of some beautifully balanced and structured wines.

Vinification details

Grapes were hand harvested before de-stemming and crushing. Fermentation took place in concrete tanks with a combination of plunging and pumpovers. The wine was matured in French oak for approximately 24 months and then received 18+ months in bottle before release.

Tasting note

The nose shows intense red and black fruits of cherry and mulberry along with rosehip florals and sweet spice. The palate is long and complex and although concentrated is not full blown, showing more red cherry and blackcurrant fruit along with some rosewater and sweet herbal spice. The tannin is plentiful but supple and builds a lovely creamy texture.
