O. Fournier: Argentina
O. Fournier’s flagship label, Alfa Crux wines are named after the stars of the Southern Cross, a constellation only visible in the Austral Hemisphere.
An iconic Malbec-based red blend, with 60% Tempranillo, 25% Malbec and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged for 20 months in the finest French and American oak, there is are very ripe raspberries on the palate, with cinnamon and smooth, rich vanilla cream notes.
TIME IN OAK
2007 had good thermal amplitude with early frosts during flowering which caused a drop in the yields. In general, the average rainfall was below average. It was a good year for late-ripening varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon.
Grapes were hand-harvested by O. Fournier’s own workers into 18kg boxes. A double sorting and selection of fruit then took place at the winery. Fermentation occurred in French oak vats with 28 days of skin contact, before the wine was transferred to new oak barrels (80% French oak and 20% American) for 20 months’ maturation.
