Vintage conditions

A cool spring with windy conditions led to a delay in bud-burst, but the season then saw record temperatures in late December. This was followed by a mild January/February, at the start of harvest was 10 days later than 2019. This trend followed throughout the season with the final fruit coming in during mid-April. Yields were below average in shiraz and cabernet but healthy crops on most other varieties. The 2020 reds are displaying bright red-fruited fragrance with great intensity on the palate.

Vintage conditions

The 2019 vintage at Coriole had dry weather, resulting in one of our smallest vintages ever. Yields were down, particularly with shiraz, but the wines show impressive depth and balance. Our Mediterranean varieties showed their potential under these conditions, with the sangiovese vines producing solid yields, great balance, flavour and acidity.

Vintage conditions

After solid rainfalls during 2017 and early 2018 the vineyards were in good health heading into the growing season. Early spring was cold which led to late budburst and early predictions were for a  late vintage. As the season progressed rainfall reduced and we had several warm spells which brought on ripening. A warm dry summer led to much lower yields than initially expected, some bunch weights were half what they were in 2017. Picking started in earnest in mid February and proceeded at a leisurely pace throughout March and into early April. 2018 is a vintage of exceptional quality. The resulting wines are intense and concentrated, the whites rich and flavoursome, the reds structured and complex.

Vintage conditions

The winter and spring of 2016 were among the wettest on record which delayed flowering. By early summer some periods of good warm weather encouraged growth but vintage was still looking a month behind 2016 and more in line with an old-fashioned vintage. Several rainfall events in January further delayed vintage and had the Coriole vineyard team working hard. Thankfully the warm and dry weather returned and the harvest proceeded at a leisurely and relaxed pace allowing a long ripening time for maximum flavour development. The wines look outstanding.

Vintage conditions

Conditions in the spring of 2015 were very dry, yet there was impressive vine growth, some old hands saying they had never seen the vineyards looking so good! Above average temperatures in October and December led to predictions of a very early, swift vintage. Ripening, however, slowed in January. 60-70 mm rain fell, followed by an unusually cool February average of 19.5°C. Gentle ripening continued and picking was slow paced and orderly.
