The Shotfire range immortilises the Clarke’s ancestry in the Barossa goldfields and the Shotfirer’s hazardous job of setting and lighting the charges in the mines.

Deep red with purple tints. The nose is rich and concentrated with dark fruits, charred oak and mocha notes, while the palate shows dense plum and mulberry with dark chocolate and savoury oak tannins. The wine is intense, balanced and shows great length on the palate.

Vintage conditions

A warm dry spring led to into similarly dry conditions in December and January. The warm weather brought harvest on in the first week of February. A couple of good rain events led to milder conditions and a long even ripening period and excellent flavour development. The wine from 2016 show typical Barossa warmth and generosity and should age well.

Vinification details

The grapes were crushed and de-stemmed into fermenters, where yeast was added immediately. The ferments were pumped over twice daily to maximise colour, tannin and flavour extraction and cooling was used to ensure ferment temperatures remained in the 22-25°C range which allows maximum fruit expression. Pressing took place approximately seven days after crushing and the wine is then filled to American oak to mature (14 months in 40% new American hogsheads with the balance going into 2nd-and 3rd-fill barrels).

Vintage conditions

The 2015 vintage was characterised by a dry period extending from July to April, together with warmer-than-usual temperatures during spring until mid January, which advanced maturity on lower-yielding vines. Subsequent mild temperatures slowed maturation, which concentrated flavours and intensified colour development.

Vinification details

The grapes were de-stemmed into fermenters. Ferments were pumped over twice daily to maximise colour, tannin and flavour extraction. Cooling was used to ensure ferments remained in the 22-25°C range which allows maximum fruit expression in the wine. Pressing occurred approximately seven days after fermentation commenced and the wine was then filled to American oak to mature (14 months in 40% new American hogsheads with the balance going into 2nd and 3rd fill barrels).

Dark inky red with vibrant red hues. The aromas are of red and dark berries, smoky toasty oak, liquorice, ground brown spices of nutmeg and cinnamon with a touch of vanillin. This wine is full bodied with abundant fine taut tannin that gives the palate a savoury drying sensation like dark chocolate which balances the sweet berry flavours in the mid palate. Excellent persistence and presence on the aftertaste. The wine will reward those who cellar correctly and have patience.

Vintage conditions

Spring rainfall was well below average with several days reaching 30°C. The growing season had even temperatures and little rainfall. Ripening was slow and steady leading to the development of good tannin structure and fruit characters.
